In terms of the bid, it has been half-half: 1946-7 and 1985-6 under ALP, and 1956-7 and 1973-4 under LIB. While Australia may have sat on the Council in the 1973-4 period (ie. the Labor Whitlam govt period), the bid was decided in December of 1971 and conducted throughout 1972, and therefore was a bid by the Liberal Gorton and McMahon govts. Australia became officially endorsed by the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) in April 1972, and was voted in on 20 October 1972, ie. months before Whitlam's government came to power in Dec 1972.Angela Evansnoreply@blogger.com
