Kindly allow me to correct the spelling of his name in your second paragraph.
Julesjuleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15884756122716396541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17639100.post-28320733072941952862009-05-11T15:57:00.000+10:002009-05-11T15:57:00.000+10:00Thanks Barry, for your prompt reply. meanwhile, I ...Thanks Barry, for your prompt reply. meanwhile, I found a book ”Not even wrong: the failure of string theory and the search for unity in physical law“
By Peter Woit http://books.google.com/books?id=pcJA3i0xKAUC (i Googled string theory) the author's thesis (as title suggests) supports our skepticism to question string theory. Mind you, we are some bold laymen to poke holes in Edward Witten's (”smartest man in the world“) theory. Read excerpts of book on its link. I agree with your reply. M theory falls under the maxim: one cannot solve a problem that is impossible to formulate.juleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15884756122716396541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17639100.post-50280919619246947712009-05-11T14:07:00.000+10:002009-05-11T14:07:00.000+10:00Thanks for your comments Jules.
I'm a journalist ...Thanks for your comments Jules.

I'm a journalist not a string theorist so I'm not qualified to comment on whether string theory will eventually amount to a TOE. Suffice is to say that very few scientists fully understand the variants of M-Theory and it would appear to be very much a mathematical work in progress.

In any case if it is on the right lines, then a Theory of Everything is likely to be so obtuse, it is difficult to see how it could be of practical benefit to anything!

But no doubt science (and technology) will prove me wrong.Derek Barryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15581505641163336050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17639100.post-57436415704935624452009-05-11T13:39:00.000+10:002009-05-11T13:39:00.000+10:00Thank you, Woolly, for this string and CERN inform...Thank you, Woolly, for this string and CERN information.
Is string theory the answer to T.O.E.? (Theory of Everything) Einstein final conundrum. Ed Witten, allegedly world's smartest Person (Ed teaches as a theoretical physicist at Princeton) says strings answer Einstein quest and explain the universe with a singular formula. i am dubious but it's the best theory we have so far.juleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15884756122716396541noreply@blogger.com
